Is Laser Hair Removal Better Than Shaving?

by Tammy Tucker

Having smoother, softer skin is a common preference among both men and women. Hair removal is one way to achieve this goal. There are many different forms of hair removal available and two of those are shaving and laser hair removal. To determine which method is best for you, it is helpful to know how these methods compare.

The Process

Shaving is a very easy process that involves using a razor or electric shaver, soap or shaving gel/lotion, and water to remove hair from the skin. However, this process may vary a bit depending on whether you use a razor or an electric shaver. The skin should be wet when using a razor, but it is best to keep the skin dry when using an electric shaver.

Laser hair removal is considered to be a medical procedure. It is commonly performed in a doctor's office by a dermatologist or in a spa by an esthetician who has been trained to perform laser hair removal. This is done by first putting a cooling gel on the skin and then using a handheld laser instrument to shoot laser beams into the hair follicles. The follicles are damaged and the hair does not grow back or growth is slowed down for a few months up to a few years.

The Frequency of Treatments

For many people, shaving need only be done once or twice a week to keep the skin smooth and hair free. Shaving can normally be done in every area where hair removal is desired in one session and does not need to be repeated until a few days later.

However, this is not how laser hair treatment works. Because the hair follicles are actually being burned away, there may be some discomfort in the skin. Therefore, most laser hair removal treatments are divided up into several sessions. In some cases, it may be necessary to have multiple treatments to remove all hair from the same area of the body.

The Cost

Shaving is the least expensive method of hair removal. The cost depends on which razor or shaver a person chooses and which products will be used. Because laser hair removal is an extensive process that produces long-lasting results, it can be quite expensive. It is best to get estimates from various laser hair removal providers to find the most affordable option.

Deciding whether laser hair removal or shaving is best for you depends mainly on how easy you want the method to be, how often you want it to have it done, and how much you want to spend on hair removal. Also, some who have certain medical conditions may not be good candidates for laser hair removal. It's important to let the doctor or esthetician who will be performing the service know if you have any medical issues.
