Sprucing Up Your Look

Are You a Prime Candidate for Plastic Surgery?

by Tammy Tucker

People go under the knife to achieve the ultimate look they desire all the time — plastic surgery has been a thing for over 200 years, if you can believe it. Still, not every person is an ideal candidate for plastic surgery, and not every plastic surgeon will turn away a patient who is going too far to look like their version of perfect.

The good news is that you're likely to enjoy the benefits of plastic surgery if you're already concerned about whether you'd be a good candidate or not. The ideal patient is one who is aware of their body and what plastic surgery can do, and has realistic expectations regarding results.

Are you the prime plastic surgery candidate? A consult with a plastic surgeon will reveal most things, but you can use this guide to see if plastic surgery is right for you as well.

You're at your goal weight

Lots of people go under the knife to achieve a goal that goes along with weight loss. If you get plastic surgery and lose a lot of weight; however, you can have less positive results following your procedure than if you were to wait until you achieved and then maintained your weight goal.

You're taking care of yourself

Plastic surgery should enhance your natural looks, and will not replace an unhealthy lifestyle. In other words, you cannot simply get a facelift then continue to bask in the sun without sunscreen. Liposuction will not cancel out your unhealthy eating habits (if you have them). You should already be maintaining a healthy lifestyle and taking care of yourself, and using plastic surgery only as a complementary tool to your healthy lifestyle.

Another reason plastic surgery should take a backseat to your health is this: if you have another condition, such as diabetes or a joint issue, plastic surgery and looking younger won't repair these issues. Your goal is to have a healthy enough body and mind to get plastic surgery, not to rely on changing the way you look to improve the way you physically feel.

Your plastic surgeon will give you a consult prior to performing any plastic surgery on you to ensure you are ready for any surgeries and are of sound mind. Some patients require a few counseling sessions and general doctor approval before plastic surgery can be done for the betterment of everyone involved. If you feel you are ready for plastic surgery now, let your plastic surgeon know.
