What To Know About Recovering From A Tummy Tuck

by Tammy Tucker

A tummy tuck can help you feel sexy and confident in your own skin (quite literally). Whether you suffer from a lot of loose skin and some excess fat on your abdomen because of recent weight loss or you have gone through pregnancies, it can be hard to get rid of it on your own. By actually removing excess skin from the abdomen, your surgeon can help give you that taut tummy that you had in your younger years. Just like with any surgery, the recovery is one of the most important parts.

You Will Have a Drain

Immediately after your surgery, you will have a small drain with thin tubes coming directly out of your incision. This surgical drain is designed to help your body get rid of excess fluids in the area so that you don't get an infection and everything heals nicely. Depending on the type of tummy tuck that you get, your doctor may remove the drain before you go home to recover or they may leave it in. If you do go home with a drain, you shouldn't have to worry about changing it, but you will want to keep the area around it clean.

To clean the drain, wash your hands with soap and water, gently remove the bandage, and then use a bit of gauze dipped in water to clean around the drain. Focus on getting rid of any scabs or pus that are built up around the drain.

You Can't Bend or Lift

After your tummy tuck, the last thing you will want to do is bend over or lift any heavy objects because this could exacerbate your surgical site or cause your incisions to come open. If you need help with things around your house that involve bending or lifting, ask for help If you have young children that need to be picked up, you will need to hire someone or have family come over and help you so that you don't have to lift them.

You Will Be on Antibiotics

After most surgeries, your doctor will put you on an antibiotic to help prevent you from getting an infection. The tricky thing about antibiotics is that they may be a bit harsh on your stomach and they can cause things like yeast infections. Ask your doctor what you can take with your antibiotics to avoid feeling too sick because of them.
