Sprucing Up Your Look

How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars

by Tammy Tucker

The presence of acne is bad enough, but the after-math of acne—the scars—is just as bad, if not worse, as they are an ever-present reminder of the way your skin used to look. Those scars can be lightened and possibly even completely removed to get even-toned and fresh-looking skin. See below for tips on how to help remove old acne scars.

Microdermabrasion

Using a microdermabrasion applicator at home can help further exfoliate the skin to help remove scarring, sun spots and dead skin cells. These applicators can be found at most larger stores or at beauty stores. The applicator is usually used in addition to a cleanser. Read the manufacturer's directions before using the applicator. Be sure to discontinue use if the applicator causes a rash or other skin irritation.

Dark Spot Remover

There are dark spot removers on the market that can help lighten acne scars. Be sure to talk to your dermatologist before using this type of skin treatment.

Natural Do-It-Yourself Treatments

  • Lemon Juice. Natural treatments such as using lemon juice on your scarring can help lighten the color of your scars. The lemon juice works as a bleaching agent. Dip a cotton ball in the lemon juice and apply it directly to your scars; leave it on for a few minutes and then wipe it off with a clean cloth.
  • Raw Honey and Baking Soda. You can also use raw honey and baking soda (in equal parts) and apply it directly to your scars to help regenerate your skin tissue. Leave it on for a couple of minutes and then wipe clean.
  • Baking Soda, Distilled Water and Hydrogen Peroxide. Combine 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon distilled water in a bowl. Apply the mixture to your skin and allow it to sit for 5 minutes. Then wash it off of your skin gently with a clean cloth. Dab a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide and apply it to your skin. The baking soda and water helps lessen scars, while the hydrogen peroxide helps protect your skin from pigmentation.

Applying moisturizer to your face helps keep your skin supple and hydrated. Look for moisturizers that are specifically for the face and that do not contain oils. What you put on your hands and body may not necessarily be good for the face, so look for a separate moisturizer for your face. Also look for a moisturizer that contains SPF to help protect your face from the sun's harmful rays.

Some scars may be too deep to remove with at home treatments. Contact a company like Appearance Dermatology for a consultation if your acne scars do not fade for a deeper treatment.
